The first Israeli special forces unit was born in May 1941 and known as Pal’mach, that is an acronym which comes from the Hebrew “Plugot Machatz”, that means assault platoon. The soldiers training was called Kapap, an acronym which stands for Krav Panim Panim, or face-to-face combat.
ImageKapap was not a unique system, but a mix of strict physical training, firearms training, radio communication, survival techniques, first aid and foreign languages.
The fighting with bare hands was a combination of boxing, Graeco-Roman Wrestling and standard techniques with stick or knife used by the English army. In that period there was not a specific term for each technique taught in the training programme, and so Kapap was the universal term for everything.
Then Kapap was adopted to train the Israeli Defence Force (IDF), and it was called in different ways, but Kapap will always represent the origin of the Israeli martial combat.
